Matakana
Where is it - Just one hour from Auckland via excellent roads thru some of New Zealand’s most beautiful country the Matakana region offers an abundance of activities and experiences.
What is there to do - Excellent golf courses offer country and coastal views and the course at Omaha Beach is on sand and therefore accessible year round. Next to the club house are 3 all weather tennis courts, plus petanque pitch, cafe and bar.
Omaha Beach golf course is not only on the edge of the Whangateau estuary but also only 300 meters from a kilometer long pristine white sand beach. Fishing and dive charters available.
The area also boasts some of New Zealand’s best vineyards. Enjoy a day wandering thru the various vineyards, art galleries, and/or sculpture trails.
Saturdays find the local Matakana markets busy with Aucklander’s visiting to buy up fresh organic produce, trying the local wonderful organic blueberry ice cream or just wine and coffee wine tasting while listening to jazz or exploring some of the excellent boutique shops and art galleries in the area.
The region abounds with a vast array of fresh produce, often available from roadside stalls. From limes, avocados, herbs and persimmons to chestnuts, olives, venison and oysters, a chef is spoilt for choice.
A little further afield you will find horse riding and the Goat Island Marine reserve or just wander the beaches and picnic in the sand dunes.
Dining options - Dining options vary from a romantic candlelit dinner for two, to a country-pub meal with friends in front of a crackling fire or enjoying the many cafes.
Matakana- the way the world should be.
