Kaikoura

Stunning views are afforded over crystal blue seas abounding with bird life and sea life including seals, dolphins and whales. In the winter the mountains are snow-capped for many months of the year, providing a year round playground.

The closeness of the mountains and the coast offers magical coastal alpine scenery and a host of eco-tourism oriented activities. Whether you are looking for relaxation, nature, excitement, fine wines and good cuisine, art, history and culture, Kaikoura has a multitude of options.

The town is also home to numerous artists and craftspeople, all of which incorporate local flavour into their designs. Local products can be seen in the galleries in and around the town, including gold gilding, pottery, paintings and prints, jewellery, woodturning, knitted garments and much more, or join the Art Trail starting at the Visitors Centre and see for yourself the artists at work in their own environment.

The area is known primarily for whale-watching and swimming with dolphins but there are many other activities in the area suitable for all ages and energy levels, such as Kayaking, Hiking and Tramping, Hunting and Fishing, Mountain biking and scenic flights
